How to reduce swelling after cheek filler

How to reduce swelling after cheek filler

Cheek filler is an all-time favourite procedure in the Arnicare office due to its versatility and jaw dropping impact. Cheek filler is a dermal filler procedure used to restore lost volume into the cheek bone area and can also be used to assist with marionette lines and dark under eyes. Like all dermal filler procedures, swelling after cheek filler is not uncommon and can generally be easily managed at home with a few simple tips.

Why am I swollen after cheek filler?

Swelling after cheek filler can be caused by a couple of factors. The first being the filler itself, which is largely made up of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid draws in moisture to “plump” up the skin, adding volume to the area. After filler is injected into the area the added volume to the area can cause the cheeks to look “swollen” however this should settle of a few days. The second reason for swelling is part of the bodies normal reaction to “trauma” eg a needle and filler being injected into the cheek area. Bruising often goes alongside this type of swelling. Swelling and bruising will typically resolve after a few days.

Arnicare top 4 tips to reduce swelling after cheek filler

1.      As we always say at Arnicare, be prepared. It is very important to plan your cheek filler appointment carefully. If you have any big events, make sure you have your cheek filler at least one to two weeks beforehand to give the swelling and bruising a chance to resolve, as going to a wedding with swollen, bruised cheeks is like a neon light saying “ I just had cheek filler”. Additionally, if you are wanting your “new cheeks” to fly under the radar at work a Friday night appointment may be the best option for you as the swelling will have had a chance to settle. Don’t forget with all dermal filler appointments it is very important to not take any Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication as this can lead to an increased chance of bruising after cheek filler.

2.      Apply an ice pack after your procedure and for the days following to assist in reducing swelling and associated bruising. The Arnicare lip ice packs are the perfect size to be applied for cheek filler. Don’t forget you will need two! Apply the ice pack until it defrosts, pop it back in the freezer and by the time it defrosts it is time to reapply.

3.      Sleep on your back with your head elevated. Whilst this tip sounds nice and easy it can be the most difficult depending on your preferred sleeping position. Sleeping on your side after cheek filler can compress the area and lead to swelling (cue uneven cheeks). Try to sleep on your back with your head elevated on a couple of pillows to enable the swelling to dissipate (thanks gravity!).

4.      Apply the Arnicare arnica healing cream after your cheek filler procedure to reduce swelling and bruising. The arnica healing cream has curcuma longa (Turmeric) add which is well known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. The arnica in the cream will assist in reducing any bruising. The arnica cream can be applied to the cheek area four times per day. A bonus of this cream is the Niacinamide which can assist in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Like any dermal filler procedure it is important that you attend your follow up appointment with your injector and reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Vascular occlusion is a risk that can be associated with Cheek filler. This is a time critical emergency and is important you contact your injector immediately. Click here to read more on how to spot a vascular occlusion.
