What to do for under eye bruising

Bruising is a commonly experienced side effects after cosmetic procedures like dermal filler, PRP injections or Rejuran and occurs when small blood vessels are disrupted causing leaking of blood just under the skin.

How common is bruising under the eye after cosmetic procedures?

Bruising after cosmetic procedures in general is one of the most commonly experienced side effects, bruising rates vary significantly between different studies and can be between 19-68%. Variability can be due to a number of factors including:

  • Injector experience
  • Location being injected
  • Technique being used
  • Patient medical factors

Bruising under the eye after dermal filler has been reported to be around 26% tear trough filler has a higher incident of bruising when the needle technique is used. Bruising after crows feet injections can be around 25%.

Why am I so bruised after under eye treatments?

If you are wondering why you have so much bruising under the eye, you are not alone! Bruising, especially in the under eye after treatments like PRP or Rejuran can be very large and obvious. This can be due to the relatively thin and delicate tissue in the undereye area and the amount of tiny blood vessels that are located in this area.

Bruising is always a risk for any cosmetic procedure and some of your personal attributes can increase the risk for bruising. Some medications can increase the chance of bruising, particularly some anti-inflammatory medications, anticoagulants and even Omega 3 fatty acids.

How to help under eye bruising?

If you are currently feeling like you look more like a raccoon than a Supermodel don't despair! Bruising without any intervention will typically subside in 1-2 weeks. Sometimes bruising under the eye can take a little bit longer to clear.

Top 3 tips to reduce under eye bruising

  1. Apply an arnica cream or arnica balm to the area- Arnica has been used for centuries as a homeopathic remedy for bruising and swelling. Apply 3-4 times per day to the affected area (gently is best).
  2. Use an ice pack on the area, again 3-4 times per day. Ice will help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling.
  3. Sleep on your back, with your head slightly elevated. This will help limit circulating blood volume and swelling to the area.
