What are Marionette lines?

Are you concerned about looking "grumpy" or noticing a downturned smile? Hollow marionette lines may be the casue.

 What are Marionette lines?

Mariontte lines are also known as Melomental folds, are lines that extend downwards from the corners of the mouth that are thought to occur due to repetitive facial expressions and the impact of gravity on skin that has lost its elasticity. Marionette lines form as part of the normal aging process, however the prevalence of these lines increases in people that smoke cigarettes, leading the lines to be commonly referred to as “smoker’s lines”.

How are Marionette lines treated?

In the past Marionette lines were treated with a Rhytidectomy (facelift). There are now a number of other less invasive options available to improve the appearance of Marionette lines which includes dermal fillers, thread lifts and antiwrinkle all of which can be undertaken by your cosmetic injector. When considering treatment for Marionette lines it is important to discuss the amount of product required to achieve the result you are after. Your cosmetic injector will be able to advise how much filler you are likely to need to treat your Marionette lines, however as a rough guide it can take up to 1ml of filler into each side to correct the area, which will include blending product down to the chin and jawline. Antiwrinkle can be used to correct the downward pull of the muscle that can create the appearance of looking grumpy or unhappy even when you are not. Your cosmetic injector will generally take before and after photos so that you are able to see the improvement in the area. If less product is used there is the potential for an unsatisfactory result.

What are the risks of Marionette line filler?

There are minimal risks associated with Marionette line filler. Two of the most common complications of Marionette line filler are bruising and Tyndall effect. Bruising is a common risk factor associated with all dermal filler and antiwrinkle treatments. Arnica cream can be applied to the area before and after Marionette line filler to aid in reducing bruising. Following your treatment using an Arnicare lip shaped ice pack to both sides of the face can support the reduction of swelling and bruising. Arnica cream can then be applied to the skin after the Arnicare ice pack has been removed. Arnica cream can be applied 3-4 times per day. The Arnicare Arnica cream also contains curcuma longa extract which has anti-inflammatory properties to further support recovery after Marionette line treatment. Your cosmetic injector will discuss with you prior to your treatment any medications that should be withheld or avoided which will assist in reducing the likelihood of bruising. Tyndall effect can also occur after Marionette line filler. Tyndall effect occurs when filler has been injected just inside the dermis leading to a blue tinge due to the scattering of light. Tyndall effect may be managed with massage or the use of Hyalase.
