3 tips to keep lips hydrated after lip filler

If you are considering lip filler as a way to create a lovely full lip or enhance your lips natural shape read on to find out our 3 essential tips for maintaining hydration and getting the best results from your treatment. Dermal filler injected into the lips contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body and works by attracting water to the area to create that nice full volume. Dehydration can impact the result after lip filler and deplete the volume created. Dry cracked lips are more prone to developing cold sores or infection after lip filler and impair the bodies healing process.

The nursing team at Arnicare have 3 top tips to keep your lips hydrated after lip filler.

Tip 1: Drink plenty of water

Though obvious, the best way to maintain hydration of your lips is to ensure your body is hydrated with water before your procedure. Australian guidelines recommend women drink a minimum of 2.1 litres of water per day. Bringing your water bottle with you to your consultation is a great way to remind yourself to keep your fluids up. Remember if you feel thirsty, it is likely you are already dehydrated. Keep in mind alcohol is a big no-no after lip filler as it can increase bruising. Water is your best option and an important part of your lip filler after care.

Tip 2: Add more Hyaluronic acid

As we mentioned hyaluronic acid attracts water which is why it is now a popular addition in many skincare products as a way of hydrating skin and lips. Applying a lip balm with hyaluronic acid draws water to the delicate lip area which ensures your lips are well hydrated before and after your lip filler procedure.

Our arnica lip balm has been specifically formulated for use after lip filler and contains the powerful combination of arnica and hyaluronic acid to target hydration and reduce common side effects like bruising and swelling. For the best results we recommend preparing your lips prior to your lip filler appointment to ensure they are in good condition and free from cracks and abrasions which can increase the risk of infection. Begin applying your arnica lip balm 1-2 days before you lip filler appointment and continue alternating your arnica lip balm and ice pack for 2-3 days after your appointment.

Tip 3: Avoid strenuous exercise

Finally you have an excuse to avoid exercise!

Strenuous exercise before and after lip filler will cause your cells to become depleted of fluid leading to dry, chapped and sore lips which as you have read can lead to infection, impair healing and impact on the volume of your lips after your procedure. Strenuous exercise also impairs your bodies ability to regulate heat, resulting in an increase in heart rate and temperature.

As your bodies temperature and heart rate rises, blood is drawn to the area which can also cause swelling and bruising to the area. Unfortunately, just using the sauna at the gym is also out of the question as sweating leads to dehydration which will impact your lips barrier and result of your filler.

Similar to strenuous exercise high temperatures from the sauna will increase your heart rate which again can lead to common side effects like bruising and swelling.

If you are exercising or can't resist going to the gym for a few days before and after your lip filler procedure: pack your water bottle, apply your arnica lip balm to keep those lips hydrated and ward off any bruising or swelling!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your procedure including how to keep your lips hydrated after lip filler ask your injector during your appointment as they will be able to offer targeted advice to your specific situation.
